Hillside House
Location
Cairns, QLD, Australia
Hillside House is a bespoke residential project shaped as much by the land as by the vision of its clients. Set on a steep and challenging site, the home was designed in direct response to the terrain and a series of existing concrete walls that the client wished to retain. Instead of removing these elements, they became the foundation of the design—both structurally and conceptually.
The multi-level layout steps naturally with the slope, creating a vertical living experience where each level serves a specific function. The lowest level accommodates guest quarters and utility spaces; the middle level offers bedrooms and quieter living areas; and the uppermost level is reserved for open-plan social zones, views, and natural light.
The design was developed in close collaboration with the client, whose desire to respect the existing structure and maximize outdoor living shaped key decisions. The main living area connects seamlessly to a front-facing deck and private rear pool, while the master suite—complete with ensuite and walk-in robe—opens directly to the landscaped backyard. Upstairs, family bedrooms and a balcony offer privacy and leafy outlooks, while every level is connected through carefully placed stairs and outdoor access points.
Design Strategies
Client Collaboration: The client’s input was instrumental in embracing and reusing the existing walls, shaping the home’s layout and material expression.
Site Integration: The building’s form respects the existing topography and built features, reducing excavation and environmental impact.
Outdoor Connection: Each floor enjoys outdoor access—through decks, balconies, or landscaped areas—enhancing livability and connection to nature.
